Challenge VII: dysFUNctional

"...the book provides immediate gratification, possibly comparable to seeing the show in person, through its interactive features."

American Craft Magazine

Second Prize: American Association of Museums: 2009 Museum Publications Design Competition

The Wood Turning Center has a series of exhibitions which “challenge” artists in the wood turning field to explore new areas and extend their work. For the Challenge VII exhibition the artists explore the concepts of function and dysfunction.

The idea to use carpeting for the cover was inspired by the artists’ sense of exploration in using found objects and a variety of materials in ways that were never intended. Two versions of the catalogue were produced using a different color carpeting. The back of the carpeting was bound as the front cover to allow for the title of the exhibition to be silk-screened.

The artists' work is very witty and playful with a sense of exploration and surprise around every corner. The book is designed to capture these traits. The half sheets contained all of the artists' information and they act as a means of hiding and revealing objects to add to the sense of discovery when turning each page.
